Why Should Christians Study the Bible?

18-March-14 by Pastor Larry Wilson

R.C. Sproul writes:

Many people believe that theological study holds little value. They say, “I don’t need theology; I just need to know Jesus.” Yet theology is unavoidable for every Christian. It is our attempt to understand the truth that God has revealed to us—something every Christian does. So it is not a question of whether we are going to engage in theology; it is a question of whether our theology is sound or unsound. Scripture: Exodus 20:3; Psalm 73
Sermon: “Deliverance From Idolatry”
Creedal Reading: Shorter Catechism 45–46 [paraphrased into modern English]
45 What is the first commandment?
The first commandment is,
“You shall have no other gods before me.”
46 What does God require in the first commandment?
In the first commandment, God requires us

47 What does God forbid in the first commandment?
In the first commandment,
God forbids us to deny the true God as God;
he forbids us to not trust, love, fear, worship, and serve
the true God as God
and as our God;
and he forbids us
to give to anyone or anything else
that trust, love, fear, worship, and service
that we owe to God alone.
48 What do these words “before me” in the first commandment especially teach us?
These words “before me” in the first commandment teach us that
God, who sees all things,
notices
and is greatly displeased by
the sin of having any other god.
