The Psychology of Islam Differs From That of Christianity.

05-September-14 by Pastor Larry Wilson

Dr. J. G. Vos writes:

“[For Muslims,] salvation is obtained by human works. It is characteristic of religious Muslims that they are proud or self-righteous to such a degree that it is extremely difficult to get the Christian gospel of sin and redemption across to them. …

“Why is Islam so successful? How can its rapid spread be explained? And why is it so hard to win Muslims for Christ? A Muslim student once asked the present writer why Islam is so much more successful than Christianity. After a moment’s thought the reply was given that Islam is an easier religion than Christianity to live up to; it makes less difficult moral demands upon people. There is nothing in Islam to lead a man to say, ‘O wretched man that I am, who shall deliver me from the body of this death?’ or ‘I know that in me, that is in my flesh, dwelleth no good thing.’ A religion with reasonable attainable objectives fosters self-confidence, complacency, and spiritual pride—it leads inevitably to self-righteousness, but it does not give the sinner the anguish of a guilty conscience nor the frustration of trying without success to attain in practical living the requirements of an absolute moral standard. In brief, Islam makes a man feel good, while Christianity necessarily first (and often thereafter) makes a man feel bad. The religion of the broken heart is Christianity, not Islam.”

7 tips for giving away an evangelistic book

03-September-14 by Pastor Larry Wilson

One of the best and simplest ways to share the gospel with someone is to put a good book in their hands. Here are 7 tips to help you do that well:

1. Read the book first and pray for the person you might be able to give it to.
2. Work out what you will say when you give it to him or her, and how you will say it. Don’t be apologetic or hesitant, as if you are doing something hurtful—you are trying to help him. Rather, be warmly enthusiastic about the book and let him know why you think it is worth reading.
3. Keep another copy of the book, so that you can familiarise yourself with some of the key arguments or points made in it—things that struck you as significant.
4. About a week after giving the book, ask your friend how he is finding it. If he hasn’t picked it up, don’t panic and don’t pressure him. Just move the conversation onto something else. You’ve given him a gentle nudge just by asking.
5. Ask your friend specific questions about what you personally found compelling in the book (see step 3); e.g. “How did you find his answer to the question: ‘Why did Jesus die?’” Work hard at: asking questions that are open ended and letting your friend express himself or herself; listening to what they really think; not launching into a monologue.
6. Have in mind some bridging questions that take you from the book into a more general dialogue about Christianity and his or her response. For example: “Has the book helped you identify some major questions you have about Christianity?” or “If there were one or two major hurdles you needed to overcome before really embracing Christianity, what would they be?” or “Have you come to that place in your life where you know for certain God’s acceptance?”
7. Keep praying!

SHOULD I TAKE COMMUNION HERE?

03-September-14 by Pastor Larry Wilson

blood of covenant

If you are visiting with us you may wonder whether or not you should receive the Lord’s Supper (or Holy Communion). We don’t want anyone to feel uncomfortable in eating the bread and drinking the wine. We also don’t want anyone to participate merely to go through religious motions or just to be sociable! In fact, the Bible says it’s spiritually dangerous to do so. Accordingly, we are trying to follow his instructions as nearly as we can. We do not want to keep anyone away, but we do want everyone to come in the Lord’s way.

In light of his instructions, and in the name of Jesus Christ, we invite you to commune if you can sincerely answer “Yes” to each of the following:

  • FAITH: Are you consciously following Jesus Christ, repenting of your sin, and trusting him for a right standing with God? This means that you are not trying to earn God’s favour by anything that you do.
  • BAPTISM: Have you been baptized (either as an infant or as an adult)? Baptism (the sign of union with Christ and his church) must always precede the Lord’s Supper (the sign of communion with Christ and his church).
  • CHURCH MEMBERSHIP: Are you a member of a local Christian church that proclaims the gospel? Since the Lord gives his Supper as a visible sign to his visible church, participating is a privilege of local church membership.
  • CONFESSION OF CHRIST: Have you publicly professed your faith in Christ? Has the leadership in your local church formally recognized your confession as credible?
  • CHRISTIAN LIVING: Are you seeking—in reliance upon God’s strengthening grace—to live for God and to obey his Word in all things? When you sin, do you seek God’s grace in Christ to forgive you and to enable you to live in renewed obedience to him?
  • ACCOUNTABILITY: Are you a church member in good standing (not excommunicated or asked by your church to refrain from taking communion)? We respect our Lord’s discipline through other churches, and we do not want to encourage the practice of lowering the standards of Christian living or evading accountability by allowing unrepentant people to do what their own congregations do not allow them to do.

If you can sincerely answer “Yes” to each of these things, then we welcome you in the Name of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. We believe he wants you to receive his grace and rededicate yourself to him and his church in this way.

If you can not answer “Yes” to each of these things—or if you are not sure—then, in the name of Jesus Christ, please do not participate at this time. We invite and encourage you to watch, to pray for more light, and to talk with the pastor about how to take steps to enable you to enjoy communion with Christ and his people.

5 Questions to Ask When Reading the Bible

01-September-14 by Pastor Larry Wilson

How can you get more profit out of your Bible-reading by meditating on Scripture? Steven Lawson suggests 5 questions to ask when reading the Bible. He writes:

How exactly does the Bible—an ancient book written thousands of years ago—reveal God’s way to people today? There are several key questions we must ask, the answers to which reveal to us the way. Here they are:
