Enjoying Friendship With God

23-March-14 by Pastor Larry Wilson

William VanDoodewaard writes:

What is communion with God? In the first epistle of John we are told that Christians fellowship with “the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ.” (1 John 1:3) The Christians of John’s day were marginalized, despised, and persecuted. Why would anyone want to become a Christian? Yet, for all the apparent disadvantages, it was not only desirable, but honourable and glorious. “Truly,” John says, “our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ.”

Why Should Christians Study the Bible?

18-March-14 by Pastor Larry Wilson

R.C. Sproul writes:

Many people believe that theological study holds little value. They say, “I don’t need theology; I just need to know Jesus.” Yet theology is unavoidable for every Christian. It is our attempt to understand the truth that God has revealed to us—something every Christian does. So it is not a question of whether we are going to engage in theology; it is a question of whether our theology is sound or unsound. It is important to study and learn because God has taken great pains to reveal himself to his people. He gave us a Book, one that is not meant to sit on a shelf pressing dried flowers, but to be read, searched, digested, studied, and chiefly to be understood.

To Prepare for Lord’s Day Worship, 23 March 2014

17-March-14 by Pastor Larry Wilson

23 March 2014 — 10 AM Worship

Scripture: Exodus 20:3; Psalm 73
Sermon: “Deliverance From Idolatry”
Creedal Reading: Shorter Catechism 45–46 [paraphrased into modern English]
45 What is the first commandment?
The first commandment is,
“You shall have no other gods before me.”
46 What does God require in the first commandment?
In the first commandment, God requires us
not only to know and acknowledge him
to be the only true God
and to be our God;
but also to trust, love, fear, worship, and serve him accordingly.
47 What does God forbid in the first commandment?
In the first commandment,
God forbids us to deny the true God as God;
he forbids us to not trust, love, fear, worship, and serve
the true God as God
and as our God;
and he forbids us
to give to anyone or anything else
that trust, love, fear, worship, and service
that we owe to God alone.
48 What do these words “before me” in the first commandment especially teach us?
These words “before me” in the first commandment teach us that
God, who sees all things,
notices
and is greatly displeased by
the sin of having any other god.
Hymns: TH 382 — “God Himself is With Us”
TH 512 — “I Lay My Sins on Jesus”
Psalm 73:16–28 (Tune = Full Circle)
Doxology: TH 312:4 — Psalm 72:18–19

23 Mar 2014 — 3 PM Worship
