Larger Catechism #80–81 (paraphrased into modern English) | 80 Can you really be sure that you are in the state of grace and that you will persevere in it to salvation? |
If I truly trust Jesus Christ and endeavour to walk in all good conscience before him, then I can—without extraordinary revelation— really be sure that I am in the state of grace and will persevere in it to salvation. This assurance comes through faith resting on the truth of God’s promises, and by the Holy Spirit enabling me to discern in myself those graces to which God makes the promises of life, and bearing witness with my spirit that I am a child of God. |
81 Is every true believer always sure that he is in the state of grace, and that he will be saved? |
Because assurance of grace and salvation is not of the essence of faith, a true believer may wait long before he attains it; even after enjoying it, he may have it weakened and interrupted through various troubles, sins, temptations, or chastenings and testings. Even so, the Spirit of God will never leave him without such a presence and support that he will keep him from sinking into utter despair. |
