45 What is the first commandment?
The first commandment is, “You shall have no other gods before me.” |
|
46 What does God require in the first commandment?
In the first commandment, God requires us not only to know and acknowledge him to be the only true God and to be our God; but also to trust, love, fear, worship, and serve him accordingly. |
|
47 What does God forbid in the first commandment?
In the first commandment, God forbids us to deny the true God as God; he forbids us to not trust, love, fear, worship, and serve the true God as God and as our God; and he forbids us to give to anyone or anything else that trust, love, fear, worship, and service that we owe to God alone. |
|
48 What do these words “before me” in the first commandment especially teach us?
These words “before me” in the first commandment teach us that God, who sees all things, notices and is greatly displeased by the sin of having any other god. |
